Can you tell which towers carry 5G? Not from this data
A direct answer to a question we get asked constantly, an explanation of why the public record cannot answer it, and what the data can tell you instead.

Short answer: no. The federal antenna structure register records physical structures. It contains no field for generation, technology, band, carrier or equipment. There is no way to derive 5G presence from it, and any site claiming to show you “5G towers” from this data is inferring something the data does not contain.
It is worth explaining why, because the reason is structural rather than an oversight.
Two separate regulatory systems
Structure registration exists for aviation safety. It asks: is there a tall object here, does it need lights, is it painted. The output is the dataset behind this site.
Spectrum licensing exists to allocate radio frequencies. It asks: who may transmit what, where, at what power. It is a different database with different identifiers.
Nothing joins them. A structure record has no field pointing at the licences of the equipment mounted on it, and licences are frequently issued for a whole geographic market rather than for individual sites — so even with both datasets in hand, you cannot reliably say which specific structure carries which band.
Add that most structures are owned by tower companies leasing to multiple carriers, and the chain from “structure exists” to “5G here” has at least two broken links.
Why the question is asked anyway
Because “5G tower map” is what people search for, and several sites promise to deliver it. What they generally deliver is one of:
- Structure registrations relabelled as 5G, which is simply wrong
- Carrier coverage maps redrawn, which is the carriers’ own marketing data
- Crowdsourced measurements from user apps, which is real data but is a record of where people walked with a particular app rather than a map of infrastructure
The third is genuinely useful and we would point you to it. The first is not.
What the structure data can tell you
Plenty, provided the question is about structures rather than technology.
Where tall infrastructure is. Comprehensively, above the registration threshold.
How dense it is. Our city and state pages compute structures per capita and per square mile, which supports meaningful comparison between places.
Who owns it. More than half belongs to tower companies rather than carriers, which is itself a surprise to most people.
When it was built. Construction dates span decades and show regional build-out patterns clearly.
How tall each one is, and how that compares. Rankings and percentiles within a city, county and state.
What is nearest to a given point. With distances and bearings.
None of that answers “does this mast carry 5G”. All of it answers questions the carriers’ coverage maps cannot.
If you actually want to know about 5G at your address
The carriers’ coverage maps. Optimistic, but they are the only source that knows what is deployed. Compare all of them rather than one.
Crowdsourced measurement apps. They record actual observed signal by band. Coverage is uneven because it depends on where users have been, but where data exists it is real measurement rather than a model.
Your own phone. Field-test modes report the serving band, and on most handsets they are accessible. Walking the property with the phone answers the question for your address better than any map.
Why we do not guess
We could infer. Structures owned by carriers in metropolitan areas built after 2019 are more likely to carry recent equipment than a 1997 broadcast mast in farmland — that inference is not crazy.
We do not publish it, because a plausible guess presented on a data site becomes a fact in the reader’s mind, and we would rather be useful about what the record contains than confident about what it does not. The pages here say “registered structure” instead of “cell tower” for the same reason.
