Where American charging is thin, and how to tell from the data
DC fast share matters more than station count. How to read charging density figures, why per-capita numbers mislead in states with lots of driveways, and what a genuine charging gap looks like.

“How many charging stations are there” is the wrong question, and it is the one most coverage answers. Two better questions: how many ports, and how many of them are fast.
Sites versus ports
A charging location with twenty-four Level 2 ports at an office campus and a single lonely charger at a rural diner both count as one station. Any comparison built on station counts will overweight the diner.
Our state and city pages report both, and the port figure is the one to use for comparison. The gap between the two rankings is substantial in places with a lot of workplace charging.
Level 2 versus DC fast
This distinction matters more than any other, because the two solve different problems.
Level 2 solves parking. It is for cars that are stopped anyway — at home, at work, at a hotel. A place with abundant Level 2 and no fast charging is well served for residents and useless for anyone passing through.
DC fast solves travel. It is what makes a route viable. A place with two fast chargers on an interstate matters far more to through-traffic than fifty Level 2 ports downtown.
Nationally, DC fast is a modest share of all ports. When a state page here shows a low DC fast share, that is the single most informative number on the page.
Why per-capita charging figures mislead
We report ports per 10,000 residents, and it is worth being explicit about what that does not capture.
Home charging is invisible. It is by far the largest category of charging in the country and appears nowhere in the register. A state of single-family homes with driveways needs much less public charging per resident than a state of apartment buildings — and will look worse on a per-capita measure while being better served in practice.
Highway charging serves non-residents. A rural county on an interstate may have fast chargers sized for through-traffic. Divided by its own small population, that produces a figure that overstates local provision dramatically.
EV ownership is not evenly distributed. Ports per resident is not ports per EV, and the ratio between those two varies by more than the ports figure does.
So per-capita density is a legitimate comparison between similar places, and a poor one between dissimilar places. We show it because it is more informative than raw counts, not because it settles anything.
What a real charging gap looks like
Three signatures worth looking for on our pages:
Low DC fast share in a large state. Plenty of Level 2, very little fast. Fine for residents, hard for travel.
Few sites across many cities. The state page reports how many distinct places have charging. A state with charging concentrated in two metros has a corridor problem even if its total is respectable.
Single-network dominance. The network breakdown shows how many operators are present. A place served by one network is fragile: one outage, one app, one payment system, and no fallback.
The inverse is what a well-provisioned area looks like: several networks, meaningful DC fast share, and charging present in many places rather than concentrated in a few.
The reliability caveat
None of this measures whether the chargers work.
Reliability of public fast charging in the US is a documented problem, and it is the complaint that dominates driver surveys. The register records what is installed; it has no field for uptime, and no public dataset covers it well.
A state with excellent numbers on our pages and poor real-world reliability would look identical to one where everything works. That limitation is worth carrying with you through every figure on this site.

- Charging locations — how many distinct sites
- Total ports — the better measure of capacity
- DC fast share — whether the place works for travel or only for parking
- Networks — how much redundancy there is
- Ports per 10,000 residents — useful against comparable places, misleading against very different ones
And the list of individual sites, where the access column marks the private ones you cannot use — which the headline counts include and your journey plan should not.
