EV charging levels 1, 2 and 3 — what the numbers actually mean
The three charging tiers, realistic charging times for each, and why the fastest number on a charger's label is almost never the speed you get. Practical rather than promotional.

Charging speed is described in a confusing mix of levels, kilowatts, amps and marketing numbers. Here is the practical version.
The three levels
Level 1 — about 1.4 kW
An ordinary 120-volt household socket. Roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour.
That sounds useless and is not. Plugged in overnight for twelve hours, you get 40–60 miles — more than most people drive in a day. For a plug-in hybrid, or a second car, Level 1 at home can be the entire charging strategy and cost nothing to install.
For anything else it is a backstop.
Level 2 — about 6 to 19 kW
240 volts. This is what a home wall box provides, and what the overwhelming majority of public chargers provide. Roughly 15–40 miles of range per hour depending on the installation and the car.
Most public Level 2 sits around 7 kW. A meaningful charge takes hours, which is why Level 2 is found where cars are parked anyway: workplaces, hotels, shopping centres, apartment blocks.
An important limit: the car decides. Most EVs have an onboard AC charger rated at 7–11 kW. Plugging into a 19 kW Level 2 station does not help if the car will only accept 7. This catches people out, and it is not the station’s fault.
DC fast charging — 50 to 350 kW
Often called Level 3, though the standards bodies do not use that term.
DC fast charging bypasses the car’s onboard charger entirely and feeds the battery directly. Speeds range from 50 kW at older installations to 350 kW at the newest. Realistically that is 10 to 80 per cent in anywhere from 18 to 60 minutes.
This is the tier that makes long journeys practical, and it is the number worth checking before you set out.
Why you rarely get the advertised speed
A charger rated at 350 kW will very seldom deliver 350 kW to your car, and this is normal rather than a fault.
The car sets the limit. Peak DC acceptance varies enormously between models — some cap around 50 kW, others accept 250 kW or more. The station cannot exceed what the car asks for.
Charging slows as the battery fills. The peak rate is available at low state of charge and tapers substantially above about 60 per cent. Charging from 10 to 80 per cent is far faster per kilowatt-hour than 80 to 100. This is why route planning advises short frequent stops rather than charging to full.
Temperature matters. A cold battery accepts charge slowly until it warms. In winter the first few minutes of a fast charge can be strikingly slow. Some cars precondition the battery when you navigate to a charger, which helps a great deal.
Shared cabinets. Some installations share power between adjacent stalls. Two cars on one cabinet may each get half the rated output.
What the register tells you, and what it does not
The AFDC station data this site uses reports the number of ports at each level. That tells you the site’s configured capacity.
It does not tell you:
- Whether a port is free right now. The register is a directory, not a live feed. Use the operator’s app for availability.
- The actual kilowatt rating of each port. A “DC fast” port might be 50 kW or 350 kW; the field does not distinguish.
- Whether the equipment is working. Reliability varies considerably between networks and this is the single largest practical complaint about public charging in the US.
