The tallest structures in America are television masts in farmland
The tallest things in the United States are not skyscrapers. They are guyed broadcast masts on flat cheap land in the Dakotas and the Central Valley, and the reason is a combination of physics, economics and one 1970s accident.

Ask which is the tallest structure in the United States and most people say a skyscraper. The answer is a television mast in a field in North Dakota, and it has been for decades.
The federal antenna structure register makes this easy to verify: sort every constructed registration by overall height and the top of the list is almost entirely guyed broadcast masts, overwhelmingly on flat agricultural land.
Why broadcast, and why so tall
A television or FM transmitter needs line of sight to its audience. Coverage is limited by the radio horizon, which grows with the square root of height. Doubling the mast height extends the horizon by about forty per cent — meaningful, and worth a great deal to a station covering a wide rural market.
Mobile networks solved the coverage problem differently: many sites, each modest, reused frequencies between cells. Broadcast could not do that, because every viewer must receive the same signal from the same transmitter. One station, one antenna, as high as it can be built.
That divergence is why the tallest structures are broadcast rather than wireless, even though wireless owns far more structures overall.
Why guyed
Above roughly 300 metres, a freestanding tower becomes very expensive. The base must resist enormous overturning moment, and the material required grows faster than the height.
A guyed mast solves this differently: a slender central column, held vertical by tensioned cables anchored in a wide ring. The column carries compression, the cables carry the lateral loads, and the whole thing uses a fraction of the steel.
The cost is land. Guy anchors need a clear radius of roughly sixty to eighty per cent of the mast height — so a 600-metre mast needs a circle of cleared land the better part of a kilometre across.
That is the whole explanation for the geography. The tallest structures are where the tall structure economics work: flat land, cheap land, and enough of it.
Where they are
North Dakota, Iowa, Texas, California’s Central Valley, the flat parts of the Southeast. Sort our state pages by maximum height and the pattern is immediate.
The tallest of all sits near Galesburg, North Dakota: a guyed television mast of 627.8 metres, or 2,060 feet. Walnut Grove in California’s Central Valley, Alvin and Hitchcock in Texas, and Alleman in Iowa all have masts within a few metres of 610 metres.
None of these places is a major population centre. All of them are flat, agricultural, and within transmitting distance of a metropolitan market.
The 1970s accident that set the ceiling
The FAA and FCC treat structures above 2,000 feet with particular scrutiny, and very few have been built since the 1970s.
Part of that is regulatory. Part is that the market changed: cable, then satellite, then streaming progressively reduced the value of squeezing another few kilometres out of a terrestrial broadcast footprint. The economic case for a 2,000-foot mast largely evaporated.
So the tallest structures in the country are mostly old. They are monuments to a period when over-the-air television was how most people watched, and building the tallest thing for a hundred miles was a rational commercial decision.
What this looks like in the data
Three patterns you can see directly on this site:
Median height varies by state more than you would guess. States with flat land and broadcast history have noticeably taller median structures than coastal urban states, where the typical registration is a monopole.
Structure type correlates with height sharply. Nearly everything above 300 metres is guyed. Monopoles cluster in a band from 30 to 60 metres.
The tall ones are old. Sort a state’s tallest structures and check the construction dates. The top of most state lists was built decades before the wireless sites that make up the bulk of the register.
A note on skyscrapers
Tall buildings do appear in the register — as “building with antenna”, where an existing rooftop carries transmitting equipment. The height recorded is the combined height to the top of the antenna.
That is why the tallest registered structure in a dense city is often a well-known office tower rather than anything that looks like a mast. In Houston, for instance, the tallest registration is a rooftop installation at just over 300 metres — a skyscraper with an antenna, comfortably beaten by farmland masts a thousand kilometres away.
